As I am typing this I cant help but reflect that 47 days ago Kitsap sun published an article about Skateland on Fusion Rd being sold. I met Dezera for the first time 46 days ago and most of the rest of the current sitting committee and team driving various pieces of this initiative ~ 30 days ago. Its hard to believe that this early in the Skatetown project we had a voice at during Wheaton Way redevelopment meeting at held at Sylvan KRL. Being able to provide Skatetown perspective to Leslie Daugs (Bremerton City Council district 1), Lori Wheat (Bremerton City Council district 4), Mayor Wheeler, and members of the Chamber of Commerce is a milestone in itself.
- Stood up a twitter account as another community outreach channel.
- Purchased Central Kitsap High gym floor at auction.
- Worked through countless logistics planning issues around removal, transport and storage of a used gym floor.
- Volunteer age requirements.
- Weekend and after hour access too leverage volunteers.
- Reserved 6 of the largest available U-Haul trucks for the same time-slot 7/27. Keep your eyes pealed if you are signed up as a volunteer signups to help will be going out very soon.
- And several more still in flight.
- Negotiated, draft contract, signed, accepted delivery, and transported to Kitsap ~10,000 sf of used sport court to do pop up and temporary location rinks. (official announcement coming soon)
- Did a phone conference call with Roll-On a leader in skate surface coatings about the removal and re-installation of the CKHS floor.
- Printed several T-Shirts for teams going to nationals.
- Ran (and are actively running) a logo selection process to get merch/branding moving forward.
- Acquired a trailer to support us in our mission to do popup events.
- Actively perused/worked with owners on two location options as rinks. One long term option an the other specifically near term for teams, fundraisers, and after school programs. (still all up in the air, but is being actively worked on)
- Participated in the Chamber of Commerce hosted Wheaton Way redevelopment meeting.
In closing this past week was another busy one and we took many big steps forward not all of which have gotten formally announced. If you ever want to see whats going on in real time the live task board we use is published under the contact menu.
Thank you again for the support you have shown but right now especially anything helps. Time, likes/shares on social media, and Donations all will help us accomplish this goal. We have a long road ahead and with the pace we are going and the support we are seeing we are confident Skatetown will become a reality.
I worked at Skateland for many years and am so saddened at the closing of this iconic place, and pivotal part of who I am.
I’d love to volunteer and help out with this new adventure. Please let me know how I can.
Thank you
